FRP vessel size chart: sizes, volume and flow rate
How to read an FRP vessel code
The four digits are diameter and height in inches. 1054 means 10 inches in diameter and 54 inches high. 2472 means 24 inches by 72 inches. Larger vessels sometimes add a letter for the opening, for example 4" top and bottom openings on industrial sizes.
Size chart
Volumes are the gross internal volume of the cylinder, calculated from the nominal size. Usable media volume is lower because you leave freeboard for backwash. Flow is at a filtration velocity of 10 m/h, a typical design figure for pressure sand and multimedia filters.
| Vessel | Diameter × height | Gross volume (approx.) | Filter area | Flow at 10 m/h |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0844 | 8" × 44" | 36 L | 0.032 m² | 0.3 m³/hr |
| 1035 | 10" × 35" | 45 L | 0.051 m² | 0.5 m³/hr |
| 1054 | 10" × 54" | 69 L | 0.051 m² | 0.5 m³/hr |
| 1252 | 12" × 52" | 96 L | 0.073 m² | 0.7 m³/hr |
| 1354 | 13" × 54" | 117 L | 0.086 m² | 0.9 m³/hr |
| 1465 | 14" × 65" | 164 L | 0.099 m² | 1.0 m³/hr |
| 1665 | 16" × 65" | 214 L | 0.130 m² | 1.3 m³/hr |

Quick sizing: use the pressure filter sizing calculator or the water softener calculator.
Picking a size
- Sand and multimedia filters: size on area. Divide your flow in m³/hr by 10 to get the area you need, then pick the vessel with at least that area. Use 8 m/h for dirtier water.
- Activated carbon filters: size on contact time as well as area. Carbon needs roughly 5 to 10 minutes of empty-bed contact time for chlorine and organics, so the vessel is usually taller or one size larger than a sand filter for the same flow.
- Softeners: size on resin volume. Work out the hardness load per day, divide by the resin's capacity, and pick a vessel that holds that resin with about 30 to 50 percent freeboard.
For flows above about 12 m³/hr, use two vessels in parallel or a mild steel rubber-lined vessel. We supply FRP pressure, filter and softener vessels with distributors and multiport valves, and build complete sand, carbon and softener filters.
FAQs
What does 1054 mean on an FRP vessel?
It is the size in inches: 10 inches in diameter and 54 inches high.
How much water can a 2472 FRP vessel filter?
As a sand or multimedia filter at 10 m/h, about 3 m³/hr. At 8 m/h for dirtier water, about 2.3 m³/hr.
How much media goes in a 1465 vessel?
Its gross volume is about 164 litres. Fill to about 60 to 70 percent with media and support gravel, leaving freeboard for backwash.
